What is Friends of the Library??


The Friends of the Library Southport & Oak Island (FOLSOI) is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization registered under 501(c)(3) of Internal Revenue Code dedicated to supporting the Margaret & James Harper, Jr. Library in Southport and the G.V. Barbee, Sr. Library on Oak Island, their missions and programs.
The FOLSOI offers financial support for library programs, community outreach and facilities improvements, through activities such as book sales, other fundraisers and dues collection, ensuring that extra funding beyond the Libraries’ regular budgets are protected and earmarked to enhance Harper’s and Barbee’s services.
The FOLSOI organization aims to engage the community in library programs.  It seeks to upgrade the quality of library services by means of gifts, reading materials, collections, facilities and programs.
What is a Friend?
Friends are people who are committed to the development and support of a quality, community oriented public library system.
What do Friends do?
Provide volunteer support
Raise funds to support the libraries’ non-budgeted needs
Support children’s programs
Promote literacy and the love of books
Sponsor cultural and literacy programs
Promote library advocacy in the community and on legislative issues

Living on the Waterfront in Downtown Southport, NC

I love this house!  It is on my 2- mile route around downtown Southport.  Near the top of a slight incline, at the end of my walk, just when I am starting to get tired. I start to slow down, to decrease my heart rate, or maybe just to look at the house and dream what it must be like to live there. It lives on the Cape Fear River and has magnificent views of the ICW, Bald Head Island and Caswell Beach as well as their lighthouses. 

Can you imagine waking up to a beautiful sunrise, stepping out on you back deck with a cup of morning coffee, or rocking on your back porch while watching the dolphins jump and play and teach their babies to hunt?  Imagine catching dinner off your own private dock, reading a book while resting in your gazebo. Jumping into your boat to go fishing or a sunset cruise.  What about evenings sipping sweet tea on your front porch while your friends and neighbors stroll by. The possibilities seem endless!

It's location is also a bonus.  It is only four or five blocks from the waterfront park, close to tennis courts and parks, and biking distance to many local restaurants and shops.  It has to be fun to ride your bike to the July 4th festivals and parades and not have to worry about the traffic going home!!!  Or what about walking to the Farmer's Market on Wednesdays to get your fresh produce and baking items for the week.  Wow!  I think it sounds perfect!  Plus it's red metal roof makes it very easy to spot from the water, and from space! :-)

Warrior Ride Carolina Challange 2011

This is a 100% non-profit organization where all procedes go to the warriors!!!

October 6th: Holly Ridge, NC to Cape Fear Community College, Wilmington

October 7th: Carolina Beach, NC to Winding River Plantation

October 8th: Oak Island Community Ride, Public Invited!


I read that this is the 6th consecutive year that the warriors have come to New Hanover and Brunswick Counties!  It is a 3 day event where many wounded warriors, many from our own Fort Bragg and Camp Legeune, come and participate in the bicycling event.  On Saturday, October 8th the public is welcome to join in the race with registration beginning at 7am at Middleton Park's Soccer Field.


They are also having Oak Island Community Day where you can meet our warriors and spend the day having fun in the sun. Food, music, demonstrations and a chinese auction from 9 until 3!

This is an awesome way to show love and support to those who love and support us!
