First, they head to Dosher Hospital to pick up Santa and light the Christmas Tree. After a short parade around town, the Fire Truck will carry Santa and all the Children to the Whittlers Bench at the Waterfront where the Christmas Tree is lit. Afterwards, they head back to the Fire Department where the children can give Santa their Christmas Wish List and enjoy refreshments. Let the Season begin!
Utilize price-comparison Internet shopping sites such as PriceGrabber.com to assist you in comparing product prices. Compare the "options" included with the product. Some retailers will low-ball the advertised price on a stripped down product, and then you will be charged extra for the necessary parts that will make the product perform as expected. A good example of this is often seen with super low-priced computer printers that come without the cable (cord) or printer ink.![]() |

Almost anyone who visits Southport will likely see, hear or sense Robert Ruark, one our most infamous and respected "sons". If you grew up here, you've heard of Ruark your entire life. Born in Southport in December of 1925, Ruark's childhood hunting and fishing adventures along the Cape Fear River with his river pilot grandfather, Captain Edward Hall Atkins, were the subjects of Ruark's famous, "The Old Man and the Boy".
Compared to Hemingway, and with Ruark admitting to modeling himself after the author, our famous Southport maverick led a life much like his idol, which eventually led to his death on July 1st, 1965 at the age of 50 from alcohol abuse.
Before fame, Ruark became a freshman at the University of North Carolina at the age of 15 and upon graduation, worked for a weekly newspaper in Hamlet, NC. When the United States entered WWII, he enlisted in the Navy. After being discharged, his writing career soared and his fame soon after.
Over the years, Ruark penned some 4,000 columns, 19 books and over 1,000 magazine articles. When his doctor warned him that his drinking would kill him within a year, Ruark set out for Africa to pursue his lifelong dream of big game hunting. After "Horn of the Hunter" was published in 1951, MGM paid Ruark 300,000 dollars for the screen rights. Ruark would also write the screenplay for the movie, which starred Rock Hudson, Dana Winter, and Sidney Poiter. His "Old Man and a Boy" stories were a regular monthly feature in Field and Stream and would later be compiled into two books, "The Old Man and a Boy" and "The Old Man's Boy Grows Older", both becoming best sellers.
Southport's premier architectural gem abounds with exquisite original details inside and out. This magnificent historic residence was the boyhood home of acclaimed sportswriter Robert Ruark, and his seafaring grandfather Captain E.H. Adkins, a Cape Fear River Pilot.
Meticulously restored by its builder/owner in 2008, this 5 bedroom 5 1/2 bath home offers the utmost in southern hospitality. Gracious entertaining is seamless in the gourmet kitchen which features quartz counter tops, a large center island, wet bar with wine chiller and beverage center and GE Monogram built in refrigerator and gas stove.
